About the course

This workplace-based course is designed specifically for miners at the Woodsmith Project. Unlike traditional English classes, it focuses entirely on real-life communication underground and on-site, using the words, phrases, and patterns that crews actually need during daily operations.

The purpose is simple: to improve safety, efficiency, and teamwork through clear communication in English. Our goal is to give miners practical vocabulary and skills they can use immediately. After each session, participants should be able to say a few more phrases at work and expand their ability to interact across the site.

By practising the exact language used in shaft operations, miners can reduce mistakes, react more quickly to hazards, and build confidence when working in mixed-language crews.

Our Approach

Learning a language is most effective when it’s practical, consistent, and connected to real life. That’s why our course is built on simple but powerful principles designed to help miners learn English that they can use every day at work.

• Learn at your own pace, anytime, anywhere

Our materials are always available online, so you can study whenever it fits your schedule — during breaks, at home, or even on the way to work.

• Learn every day for at least 20 minutes

Consistency is the key. Spending just 20 minutes daily builds long-term progress far better than long, irregular sessions. 

• Learn a few new words and phrases each day

Step by step, you’ll expand your vocabulary with language that’s directly relevant to your job. In a few weeks you are going to be surprised, how much you can say and explain in English.

• Build your own dialogs

Create short conversations that reflect your real workplace communication. Practising these will prepare you for actual situations underground.

• Discuss and practise in the WhatsApp group

Share your dialogs, practise with peers, and get feedback. Learning together makes it more fun and more efficient.

• Apply your knowledge at work on every shift

The real test is on the job. Use your new phrases with your team, and you’ll notice your confidence and communication improving shift by shift.

How it works

• Modular Learning 

The course is divided into short, practical modules. Each one targets a specific task (e.g., “Lowering the SBR” or “Pouring Concrete”, etc).

• Dialogs & Audio

Realistic dialogs model how communication sounds in practice, including radio and loudspeaker effects. Audio files allow learners to listen and repeat.

• Essential Phrases & Vocabulary 

Each module introduces a small set of key phrases and technical vocabulary in English (with support in Russian where needed).

• Downloads and Extra Curricular Resources 

Learners can download PDF files for offline use here and find additional study materials that support core modules.
